Orange and black. Fire and ebony. Fury and pride. Wearing its signature colors proudly and raising its exclamation point high, Impulse! Records was the go-to label for music that harnessed the searching and political stand-taking of the Sixties. Launched in 1961, Impulse grew to become an inherent part of the era’s velocity as well as its volume, pulling jazz into the age of Black Power, Afrocentricity, and Spiritual Expansion. In its balance of tradition and transition, it bridged the golden age of jazz, that brief window from the late Fifties to the Seventies when players representing every jazz era were alive and active—from Louis Armstrong to Albert Ayler, from the legends of lore to a new generation of energy players. Impulse treated all its musicians as innovators, revolutionaries even—from swing and bebop, to free and Afrofuturist.

The performances on Impulse Records: Music, Message and the Moment draw their staying power from a wide embrace of styles and sounds, as well as a tight focus on a historic moment when the promise of change was in the air and the message of racial harmony was in the music. Today that music has lost none of its relevance: the promise still deferred, the message still on time.

“...A collection celebrating Impulse’s deep-digging support of artists who scored We The People’s SingFight-ing for social political and artists’ self-determination in a critical time of beatdowns, breakthroughs and cosmically-centered aspirations.”

- Musician/Essayist Greg Tate

“In many ways, this collection is a mural in sound of the activist’s stimulation of the Sixties and Seventies…we need this scope of sound again: We need the horns to scream of stout resistance, and we need the bands to sing to us of the righteous beauty of our souls.”

- Journalist/Author A.B. Spellman

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

Los Angeles, California's TETRARCH – metal’s hottest new rising stars – have turned heads with their ability to successfully blend the addictive stylings of favorite modern metal pillars while maintaining a fresh sound that breaks new ground. Since bursting onto the scene with their breakout independent debut Freak in 2017, the band has garnered remarkable early acclaim from notable press, radio, industry and fellow artists alike at an impressive rate unmatched by any other new band. In 2021, they will release their sophomore full-length, Unstable – a 10-track barnburner that confirms the band’s icon status. The album wastes no time igniting with the unforgettable, punching first single “I’m Not Right” (currently boasting over 1 million views on YouTube and counting, plus huge fan buzz) – a prime example of TETRARCH’s fresh sound. The anthem's straight earworm hook, boosted by frontman Josh Fore’s raw emotion and dynamic vocal style, pays homage to the genre’s greats while lifted by the eerie leads of trailblazing lead guitarist Diamond Rowe. Radio-ready, lyrically-relevant tracks like anti-bullying anthem for the ages, “Sick Of You”, and ode to relationships-gone-bad, “You Never Listen”, showcase TETRARCH’s hefty progressions and unforgettable choruses. Unstable’s heaviest offerings prove the band’s dynamic assault of varying heavy styles, most notedly on assertive breakneck burner “Negative Noise” – a track that could turn the heads of metal’s greatest riff writers with Rowe’s mighty axe attack – and on the melodically chilling “Take A Look Inside”, highlighting the powerful rhythm section of bassist Ryan Lerner and drummer Ruben Limas. The album even ventures to explore slower introspective sides of the band on the standout, melodic “Addicted” and closer track “Trust Me”, which trickles in supernatural atmosphere. Delivering heavy hit after hit, Unstable is 10 tracks of pure potency and undeniable talent. Look no further, TETRARCH is the band to watch.

On April 23, 2021, melodic death metal pillar BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT will release their new EP, Paint The Sky With Blood, via Napalm Records. Paint The Sky With Blood was recorded in Finland back in 2020 and was meant to be the beginning of an exciting new chapter that sadly ended far too soon. The three-track offering is an impressive, overwhelming sonic tribute to an absolute legend of the metal scene – matchless late guitarist/vocalist Alexi Laiho – and at the same time, a modern homage to the genre itself. A storm of raging guitars and blaring drums merge with Laiho’s versatile vocal power, leading into a heavy attack – title track “Paint The Sky With Blood” – opening the 14 minute EP. The track is strikingly reminiscent of early-CHILDREN OF BODOM elements, while also adding exciting modern influences into the fold. Second stunner “Payback’s a Bitch” and its massive riffing are on a quest for retribution, delivering a hard-hitting, second to none offense. The interplay of Alexi Laiho, guitarist Daniel Freyberg, drummer Waltteri Väyrynen (Paradise Lost), bassist Mitja Toivonen (ex-Santa Cruz) and live keyboardist Vili Itäpelto is not only a testament to the band's extraordinary musical ability, but also showcases their skill in deftly incorporating a variety of genre influences. Closing cover track “Where Dead Angels Lie” is an absolute triumph – originally performed by Swedish extreme metal formation Dissection, the track shines as a timeless classic with a new edge. Eerie riffs and vocals alternating between menacing murmurs and characteristic guttural, distorted vocals stay faithful to the original while branding this version with an undeniable BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT punch. With Paint The Sky With Blood, BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT hold the sceptre of metal in their hands, bestowing an impressive fragment of their inimitable legacy.
