On his ninth studio album, Matt Andersen has drawn from the best roots music has to offer over his decades-long career: down and dirty blues, heart-wrenching soul, life-affirming gospel, and introspective singer-songwriter balladry. These sounds, textures, and influences are laid bare on House to House.

Amyl and the Sniffers’ unrelenting, jaw dropping live show has propelled them to must see status and prompted The Guardian to declare AATS “the single most exhilarating rock’n’roll show I’ve seen in years.” Comfort To Me is somehow both heavier and more awesome than their debut and fully captures the chaotic energy of their legendary live show. Available on Clear Smoke double vinyl.

Phototroph is by far Moon Tooth’s most energetic and “poppy” release to date… in the best way possible. It sees the band double down on the more saccharine and bouncy elements of their upbeat and unrestrained brand of progressive metal while cutting some of the “technical fat” to create a moving, emotional, and at times danceable album.

This is Delbert's 27th studio album, and a bit of a return to his roots. While Delbert wrote just a handful of songs on the album, he puts his unmistakable footprint and charm on classics and deep cuts from some of his favorite songwriters such as Hank Williams and Jimmy Reed, pulling from across traditional blues, honky tonk, R&B, and more.

The Black Keys - Dropout Boogie

The Black Keys - Dropout Boogie - Nonesuch
As they've done their entire career, The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney wrote all of the material for their new album, Dropout Boogie, in the studio, and the album captures a number of first takes that hark back to the stripped-down blues rock of their early days making music together in Akron, Ohio, basements. After hashing out initial ideas at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, the duo welcomed new collaborators Billy F. Gibbons, Greg Cartwright, and Angelo Petraglia to the sessions, marking the first time they've invited multiple new contributors to work simultaneously on one of their own albums.

UPCOMING RELEASES

Mavis Staples & Levon Helm - Carry Me Home

Mavis Staples & Levon Helm - Carry Me Home - Anti
Iconic singer Mavis Staples is an alchemist of American music, and during her 70+ year career one of her most beloved musical moments was her riveting performance in Martin Scorsese's film' The Last Waltz,' performing "The Weight", with The Band, a moment that forged a life-long friendship between her and Levon Helm. Staples came to Woodstock, NY to perform as part of Helm's renowned Midnight Ramble series, and the ensuing concert-available now for the first time on the rousing new ANTI- Records release 'Carry Me Home'-would mark a personal high watermark for both artists. Captured live in the summer of 2011, 'Carry Me Home' showcases two of the past century's most iconic voices coming together in love and joy, tracing their shared roots and celebrating the enduring power of faith and music. The setlist was righteous that night, mixing vintage gospel and soul with timeless folk and blues, and the performances were loose and playful, fueled by an ecstatic atmosphere that was equal parts family reunion and tent revival. Read between the lines, though, and there's an even more poignant story at play here. Neither Staples nor Helm knew that this would be their last performance together-the collection marks one of Helm's final recordings before his death-and listening back now, a little more than a decade later, tunes like "This May Be The Last Time" and "Farther Along" take on new, bittersweet meaning. The result is an album that's at once a time capsule and a memorial, a blissful homecoming and a fond farewell, a once-in-a-lifetime concert-and friendship-preserved for the ages. Staples and the night's soulful crew of backup singers handle the vast majority of the vocal work here, but it's perhaps album closer "The Weight," which features Helm chiming in with lead vocals for the first time, that stands as the concert's most emotional moment."It never crossed my mind that it might be the last time we'd see each other," says Staples. "He was so full of life and so happy that week. He was the same old Levon I'd always known, just a beautiful spirit inside and out." "My dad built The Midnight Rambles to restore his spirit, his voice, and his livelihood," says Helm's daughter, Amy, who sang backup vocals with her father and Staples at their performance. "He'd risen back up from all that had laid him down, and to have Mavis come sing and sanctify that stage was the ultimate triumph for him."

Written, recorded, and released during a critical historical juncture, Arcade Fire’s sixth studio album is divided into two distinct sides, “I” and “WE.” If the “I” side of the record evokes and embodies our holed-up anxiety and lack of physical connection, the “WE” side captures the excitement of new possibilities and the elevating thrill of committing to one another socially and personally.

Matador

This is a classic Belle and Sebastian album preoccupied with songs and melodies that won't leave your head. It's a band tackling the insight, experience and responsibility that come with getting older with humor and irreverence and lyrical exactitude and musical bravado. It's one of the UK's most beloved pop portraitists asserting themselves as an infallible source of energy and fun.

Sub Pop

Memories of unrequited love, fits of longing, instances of anxiety, and unfiltered snapshots interlock like puzzle pieces into a mosaic of well-worn country, '90s-style alternative, and unassuming pop. Waterhouse writes the kind of tunes meant to be grafted onto dusty old vinyl from your favorite vintage record store, yet perfect for a sun-soaked festival stage.

UNFD

Filled with moments of relentless energy throwing back to their punk and hardcore roots to visionary moments of modern heavy, Misery Made Me fastens the group's status as torchbearers of the scene on all fronts. It's both intriguing and inspiring that a band - who could have merely rested on the impressive legacy they've already cemented - would continue to dig deep and find the inspiration to reach people in meaningful new ways.

Following on from her 2018 album, Awake (#1 ARIA Dance Album, #1 Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Album), Alison Wonderland returns with her first record in four years, Loner. Featuring "Fuck U Love U," "Fear Of Dying," "New Day," and more, it’s a display of mystical, wobbly synths, gut wrenching bass and lyrics inspired by romantic loss.

No Quarter Records

An instrumental masterpiece disguised as a movie soundtrack (Werner Herzog’s 2005 documentary Grizzly Man), this is Thompson at his natural best. Finger-picking dance; snake-curl twang and singing-wire harmonics in a solo clarity that runs from jig-like joy to deep-note meditation. The “Grizzly Man” blues march to the long night of “Treadwell No More,” a harrowing darkness in slicing treble and tremolo shiver.

Dinner Time Records

With a laid-back, speak-singing delivery, “SingleWide Dreamer” immediately conveys Raitiere’s contentment in living a low-key life. And although every song on the album could be considered a love song in its own way, what really ties them together is his observant writing, which is sometimes reflective, sometimes irreverent, but always inspired by his own experiences. Co-produced by Anderson East and Miranda Lambert.

AURORA - The Gods We Can Touch

The Gods We Can Touch is an elegant and celestial but provocative album about shame, desire and morality, all seen through the narrative prism of Greek mythology. Hermitude - Mirror Mountain

Hermitude - Mirror Mountain - Nettwerk Records
The multi-instrumentalist duo that comprises Hermitude - Luke Dubber (aka Luke Dubs) and Angus Stuart (aka El Gusto) holed up together in Angus' home with a pared-back music setup, they began a process that was all about taking back control over how and why they make music as Hermitude. The duo recorded vocal sessions in-person to create a more intimate experience. You can hear it in the way the drums coil themselves around the closely recorded vocals of "When U Feel Like This (feat. The Jungle Giants)," or the confidence in "Promises (feat. Andie)" that allows her voice to soar into the upper octaves easily. This control over their process led to a loosening of their creative inhibitions. A year and a half later, Mirror Mountain was finished. The album acts as a reawakening, a place to draw strength as time goes by. "The production quality & mixing all around is super clean and polished, it's delectable to the ears." - Banger Sound

Eddie Vedder - Ukulele Songs

Eddie Vedder - Ukulele Songs - Sound Of Vinyl
Ukulele Songs comprises a fine mixture of original material penned by Eddie Vedder that he initially performed live, alongside vintage classics and standards. A recast, uke-driven version of "Can't Keep," which originally appeared as the opening track on Pearl Jam's hard-charging November 2002 album Riot Act, opens the proceedings, while newer-bred original songs like the resigned lament of "Sleeping By Myself," the charming love orbit of "Satellite," the hopeful brightness of "Light Today," and the instrumental interlude "Waving Palms" all set the table for the 35-minute album.

Redwing

Just Like That..., the lifetime Achievement Grammy Award winner’s first new studio album in six years, is both one of the most heartfelt and most daring works in her storied 51-year recording career. Raitt’s always-expressive singing is more soulful and nuanced than ever, while her songwriting achieves new levels of craft and sophistication.

Bodysnatcher play a down tempo, extremely brutal beatdown version of deathcore. Their previous album, This Heavy Void, saw the band catapult into the extreme metal scene, garnering a number of successful tour runs with Chelsea Grin, Lorna Shore, Enterprise Earth, and Slaughter To Prevail. The new record showcases the band completely dialed in, knocking on the doors of deathcore's contemporary subgenre leaders.

Prosthetic Records

If Undeath sound hyper-focused on one style, their commitment to this vision is also part of their appeal. The lyrics take delight in exploring death and torture from every angle. The message is plain: The human body is disgusting. Man's capacity for evil knows no limits. Undeath excel by soundtracking these thoughts through pitch-perfect metal bursting with energy. For them, death is only the beginning.

Jukebox Charley is the 4th installment in Charley Crockett's Lil G.L. Presents series of releases, which focus on heartfelt renditions of songs from some of Charley's biggest musical influences. This newest cover record is packed with songs originally written by greats such as Tom T. Hall, Willie Nelson, Johnny Paycheck, George Jones and more.

alt_text
Partisan

Used colloquially as an expletive, the title roughly translates from the Irish language into English as 'the damnation of the deer'; the spelling crassly anglicized, and its meaning diluted through generations. Part bittersweet romance, part darkly political triumph - the songs ultimately form a long-distance love letter, one that laments an increasingly privatized culture in danger of going the way of the extinct Irish giant deer.

Motown

Staples follows up his intimate self-titled album with Ramona. “There’s a direct correlation,” Staples says of the two records. “They were kind of created at the same time. I was in a similar state of mind. This album will make even more sense if you heard the previous one, but this one has more answers. It’s symbolic of home,” he says of the Long Beach neighborhood for which the album is named.

New West

“The last bastion of country music,” says Hedley, “was the early 1990s. You could turn on the radio and immediately know you’re hearing a country song. You could still hear steel guitar and fiddle. But there was a hard fork around 1996 or ’97, when country veered off into pop territory. Neon Blue asks, What if that fork had never happened? What if country kept on sounding like country?”

Fat Possum

Everything Was Beautiful pulls heavily from throughout the Spiritualized catalog, whether it be the Ladies and Gentlemen-era “Best Thing You Ever Had”, the soft, sentimentality of Pierce’s mid-career work on “Crazy” or the lush balance of And Nothing. All those influences, and their tonal similarities to his last album, never distract or take away from the conceptual success of Everything Was Beautiful.

Legacy

Willie is back with his 72ND solo studio album. The 14 tracks include 5 new Willie Nelson/Buddy Cannon compositions, new songs from Chris Stapleton & Rodney Crowell (“I’ll Love You Till The End Of Time”) and a cadre of top Nashville songwriters, plus a couple of plum covers by Leonard Cohen (“Tower Of Song”) and The Beatles (“With A Little Help From My Friends”) given expert interpretation by Willie.

Two Ribbons is astonishing: a dazzling, heart-breaking, life-affirming and mortality-facing record that reveals the duo’s growing artistry and ability to parse intense feeling into lyrics so memorable you'd scribble them on your backpack. This is the artefact that signals progression out of very distressing times; a story of loss, change, and of survival; a proof of life.

Lady For Sale showcases Kirke’s unselfconscious, country-twinged vocals alongside a brightly colored candy shop of glam-twang guitar riffs, department store tv commercial synth stylings, and unabashedly feminine background vocals. Following in the footsteps of their predecessors Public Enemy while drawing from influences as varied as My Bloody Valentine and German experimentalists Faust, Dälek have succeeded in adding completely new textural and structural dimensions to rap music. Misfire makes old-school flavored thrash metal devastation with the kind of bombastic firepower that could wake the dead. It's music that could have arrived in the thrash golden age of 1986, when bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Dark Angel, and Sodom delivered vital records. And yet Misfire is forward-thinking, injecting modern metal mastery into their brew for a powerful, timeless sound.

Seratones - Love & Algorhythms

Seratones - Love & Algorhythms - New West Records
Love & Algorhythms is an interstellar synthesis of astral Soul, R&B, and sci-fi Funk. Working with producer Paul Butler (The Bees, Micheal Kiwanuka, Caroline Rose, Hurray for the Riff Raff), Seratones have taken the invitation to knock at the door of the cosmos. A.J. Haynes’s voice dances with soul-stirring devotion at the altar of Black Feminisms: weaving the words Toni Cade Bambara, Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis multiverse, echoes of bell hooks, and Audre Lorde’s Power of the Erotic. With drummer Jesse Gabriel’s machine-like precision and the transcendental touches from guitarist Travis Stewart, the album oscillates between Alice Coltrane-inspired bliss & Giorgio Moroder’s ecstatic release. Each song hovers and pulsates in the wide, dark matter—constellations guiding a journey through the subtle body, the vast fullness of the human experience and the irresistible potential of liberation.

Paint This Town offers a riveting glimpse into American mythology and the wildly colorful characters who populate it. The album pays homage to everyone from Elvis Presley to Eudora Welty while shedding a bright light on the darker aspects of the country’s legacy. Fueled by the band’s freewheeling collision of Americana, old-time music, folk, and rock & roll, Paint This Town turns razor-sharp commentary into rapturous sing-alongs.

On his major label debut album, the ravenously creative Kurt Vile pulls his talents as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer in unexpected directions — and the result is a vibrant, yet meditative record propelled by his laid-back charm and curious spirit. Produced by Kurt Vile and Rob Schnapf.

This tribute album is a powerful sonic journey, traveling the course of Johnny's musical life, impeccably directed, as only his brother Edgar could. Joining Edgar on the inclusive project is an impressive array of renowned musicians who knew, or were inspired by Johnny, including Joe Bonamassa, Billy Gibbons, Michael McDonald, Ringo Starr and many more.

One listen through reveals where Wheeler’s unrivaled confidence comes from. Once again produced by Dave Cobb (except the song “God Told Me To Fuck You,”) and recorded at historic RCA Studio A, the album is a loud, unapologetic roar of a comeback. Wheeler explains, “I figured if I’m gonna save country music, why not save Rock ‘n’ Roll too while I’m at it?”

Prince Daddy & The Hyena’s third album dives into the theme of life coming to an end, both vocalist Kory Gregory's own life and fear of his friends and loved ones aging and dying. Gregory expands on why by saying, "It’s the first time that it’s hit me as an adult, the first time that the impermanence of everything struck, and that sent me into a little existential spiral.”

Dorothy - Gifts From The Holy Ghost

Dorothy - Gifts From The Holy Ghost - Roc Nation
Gifts From The Holy Ghost, Dorothy Martin’s third studio album as frontwoman for the pseudonymous rock band Dorothy, is the album she’s always wanted to make. Born from a sense of diving urgency, it’s their most bombastic rock n’ roll work yet. While their debut album was made on a combination of whiskey and heartbreak, Gifts was built on sobriety, health, and spiritualism, in a way that reverses the clichéd “good girl gone bad” narrative. It features the Top 40 Rock track, “Rest in Peace.”

Joshua Hedley - Neon Blue

Joshua Hedley - Neon Blue - New West Records
Joshua Hedley is “a singing professor of country & western,” he declares on his raucous and witty new album, Neon Blue. It might sound like a punchline, but it’s not. An ace fiddle player, a sharp guitarist, and a singer with a granite twang, he’s devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. Ask him about it and he’ll explain: “When all my friends went off to college, I went to Nashville. I was 19 years old playing honkytonks and getting an education.” His 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox, showcased his deep knowledge of country’s history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and ‘60s. His mentors were George Jones, Ray Price, and Glen Campbell, but his most remarkable accomplishment was putting his own spin on their style.

Fear Of The Dawn is the most focused and exciting White solo record yet, a precision-tooled digital reconfiguration of his rock bona fides. By splitting his 2022 albums into two distinct projects and saving his quieter material for Entering Heaven Alive, White has delivered his best release since 2012's Blunderbuss, and one of the most consistently exciting albums in his 25-year-career.Y

Young Man is their first project without electric guitars, with the emphasis instead on skillful songwriting, flawless harmony, and intricate fingerpicking. Sonically the album draws on inspirations such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, yet there’s also a dusty Western feel, similar to a Guy Clark or Townes Van Zandt album where the detailed backdrop and acoustic arrangements convey the story as eloquently as the lyrics do.

Sub Pop

Lushly orchestrated and sweetly melodic, Chloë and The Next 20th Century (his first new material since 2018’s God’s Favorite Customer) sees Father John Misty combine his Honeybear-era sound with elements of 1920s-30s jazz and traditional pop to make something that sounds both familiar and fresh.

Tucker Pillsbury continues to explore his pop sensibilities while playing with themes of love, healing, and religion - and ultimately, the power of a woman. Red Hot Chili Peppers have clearly been galvanized by guitarist John Frusciante's return from self-imposed exile in 2009 and the results are some of RHCP's strongest songs since 2002's By The Way. The sprawling 17 tracks are an impressive consolidation of their strengths an eager to relighting of the band’s classic elemental spark.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Unlimited Love

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Unlimited Love - Warner Records
Our only goal is to get lost in the music. We (John, Anthony, Chad and Flea) spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt.  We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album Unlimited Love, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare, so that when the biggestwave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is theride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it. One of the most successful acts in rock history, Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, and won six Grammy Awards, including "Best Rock Album" for Stadium Arcadium, "Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group" for "Dani California, "Best Rock Song" for "Scar Tissue," and "Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal" for "Give It Away." The band holds the record for the most No. 1 singles of all time at Alternative radio, a total of 11, and a combined 81 weeks at No. 1.

Set Sail finds the brothers working with Jesse Williams on bass and Lamar Williams, Jr. for the first time. Set Sail, North Mississippi Allstars’s thirteenth album, follows 2019’s Up and Rolling, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2021. Set Sail continues the band’s tradition of creating roots music that displays remarkable variety. Paul Cauthen - Country Coming Down

Paul Cauthen - Country Coming Down - Velvet Rose Records
Want to get a bead on Paul Cauthen? Good freakin' luck -- especially on his third album, Country Coming Down. COUNTRY COMING DOWN has been in motion awhile, actually. The title track, one of several co-writes with good Nashville pal Aaron Raitiere, has been around since before Cauthen's dark sophomore album ROOM 41. Its sense of campfire calm and "damn near off the map" idyll set a bar, for both music and lifestyle, that Cauthen aspired to, while the rest of the new album, recorded at Modern Electric Sound Recorders in Dallas with regular collaborators Beau Bedford (Texas Gentlemen) and Jason Burt (Medicine Man Revival), shows that Cauthen was able to get there without losing any of the playful "hot dog holly golly dagnabit" good-time spirit that rolls off his tongue like a tumbleweed in the west Texas panhandle.

4AD

Warm Chris blends the breezier '70s folk of 2019's Designer with the jazz explorations and the dark chamber pop of 2017's Party. As usual, the idiosyncrasy and mystique of the Kiwi folk star's songwriting is thrilling with Harding unafraid to treat the ridiculous and the sublime with equal reverence. It’s this unpredictability that keeps the listener constantly on their toes, perplexed and enthralled all at once.

Merge

Labyrinthitis brims with mystic and intoxicating terrain, circuitously drawing ever inward, with each turn offering giddy surprise, anxious esoterica, and thumping emotionality at equal odds. While Bejar initially envisioned it as a straight dance record (“just like Donna Summer’s greatest hits”), that simple notion is exploded into a million shining pieces, finding joy in mutual discovery instead of isolated certainty.

alt_text
Merge

Like all good Afrofuturist stories, it begins with an existential crisis. "It's darker than anything we've done previously," says Eno Williams, the group's singer. Produced by British synthpop group Hot Chip, a collaboration born out of a shared love of Francis Bebey and Giorgio Moroder, Electricity reveals a gleaming, supercharged, Afrofuturist blinder.

Better Noise

Asking Alexandria teams up for the first time with Better Noise Music for their seventh studio album, See What's On the Inside. The band returns with a revival and a rebirth after spending the winter of 2021 living in the studio, the first time they had spent an extended period alone together writing and recording in over a decade. The product is the truest album by the band yet.

Tell Me That It’s Over gives Wallows the opportunity to dive further into the exploration that they started on their first album, informed by everything from lo-fi post-punk to indie-folk to early-’90s dance-pop psychedelia. These 10 tracks bounce of the walls with an as much sadistic glee as nervous energy. There’s an innate ability present that makes any day that much sunnier with every listen.

alt_text
Sub Pop

After a decade building a reputation as one of the most ferociously creative art-rock groups working, Famously Alive finds Guerilla Toss coming into the fullness of their power, celebrating their prismatic idiosyncrasies from a place of optimism and abundance. It is a joyous album, equal parts bizarre, accessible, and fun, built off psychedelic texturing and Krautrock syncopation with the gloss and glow of contemporary pop music.

alt_text
Relapse

In the five tracks that make up Absent In Body‘s debut record, the band delivers music that is furiously spiritual. Its harshness is balanced by tranquil progressions that stir the mind – that lull listeners into a state where there is calm and storm. Made up of brilliant musicians Amenra’s Mathieu J. Vandekerckhove and Colin H. Van Eeckhout, Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, and ex-Sepultura’s Igor Cavelera.

alt_text
Lock13 Records

Like the creeks that run and tributaries that trickle throughout singer-songwriter Ian Noe’s homelands in Eastern Kentucky, water flows throughout his new LP. Thoughtfully and intentionally named, River Fools & Mountain Saints highlights Noe’s storytelling prowess through 12 country rockers and Appalachian ballads, depicting contemporary and historical life in the region.

alt_text
Fallen Sparks

Like only the most gifted storytellers, Matisyahu spins the rare kind of stories that simultaneously enlighten, enthrall and expand the audience’s sense of possibility. On his eponymous new album, the Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter/rapper shares his most autobiographical work to date, merging that personal revelation with a shapeshifting collision of reggae and hip-hop and boldly inventive pop.

alt_text
BMG

Like their sci-fi-noir rock contemporaries Garbage, Placebo are a band to which music is finally catching up. Nine years on from their seventh album Loud Like Love, Never Let Me Go finds their brooding cyber rock gently tweaked and polished – a little more synth, a touch more buzz and clatter – yet sounding as timely and relevant to future rock trends as ever.

alt_text
Interscope

Kelly’s ability to churn out infectious bangers is present here in his second collaborative project with drummer/producer Travis Barker. “emo girl” is a bucketload of charm; serving as a playful twist on the classic, doe-eyed poppy love song – the lyrics are so ridiculously self-aware that you can’t help but love it. And the Bring Me The Horizon feature ‘maybe’ is also a total delight, with Linkin Park-y guitars and a slick, irresistible flow.

Red House

Steve Poltz is a living example of the American music tradition, a songwriter who can bend your ear with a hooky melody, then break your heart with a wry observation about the human condition. Now in Nashville, Poltz enlisted members of The Wood Brothers for Stardust and Satellites - an album dealing with loss (he's lost both parent's in the past two years), simple joys and childhood memories.

Compass Records

Possessing one of the most distinctive and recognizable voices on the planet, former Men at Work frontman Colin Hay faces down struggle, loss and the existential questions about mortality on Now and The Evermore. It’s a defiantly joyful celebration of life and love drawing on vintage pop charm, pub rock muscle, and folk sincerity to forge a sound that's at once playful and profound, clever and compassionate, whimsical and earnest.

Hyperdub

Antidawn reduces Burial's music to just the vapours by exploring an interzone between dislocated, patchwork songwriting and eerie, open-world game-space ambience. In the resulting no man's land, lyrics take precedence over song, lonely phrases color the haze, a stark and fragmented structure makes time slow down. The result is both comforting and disturbing, producing a quiet and uncanny glow against the cold.

Ghost, one of the most esteemed and celebrated rock bands in the world today, return with their fifth psalm, Impera, fronted by the newly anointed Papa Emeritus IV. A dozen songs take on themes of isolation and demigod worship, as well as colonization of both space and mind. And all with the infectious hooky brand of rock their fans have grown accustomed.

Classic Objects is a map of places; past places, like the old empty Melbourne pubs Hval’s band used to play in, public places Hval missed throughout lockdown, imagined, future places, and impossible places where dreams, hallucinations, death and art can take you. It’s also Hval’s version of a pop album, mixed to sound as though it’s played through a stereo in a mysterious room.

Five Legged Dog — a four album acoustic retrospective/covers tribute, is a testament to Melvins’ unmatched work ethic and their penchant for pushing the envelope, then shredding it to bits. Said Melvins founder, Buzz Osborne, “One acoustic record seems like a joke and two is pretty normal, but doing FOUR?!? That’s like going to war against an army of gorillas on LSD.”

“The pandemic and lockdown really brought home the truth that spontaneity can be taken away,” said Adams. “The title song 'So Happy It Hurt' is about freedom, autonomy, spontaneity, and the thrill of the open road. The album of the same name touches on many of the ephemeral things in life that are really the secret to happiness, most importantly, human connection.”

A twenty track chronological journey through Franz Ferdinand’s career to date, Hits To The Head effortlessly runs through early singles, including the megahit “Take Me Out” while reminding us of their dancefloor appeal with cult classics “Michael” and “This Fire” standing out as forgotten indie bangers. A perfect reminder of their lasting importance and a celebration of feel-good outsider indie anthems.

Mascot

Financial troubles and tornados among other things (ahem, pandemic) called for a stop-start recording process. But out of hardship the strong survive, and Rebelator is more than just survival. There is massive power in the playing here, but the down time seems to have added a freshness and a crispness to their sound. More melodies, more hooks, more experimentation. There’s hope in this heavy.

Six Shooter Records

Carter Family meets Addams Family. Rich with quality finger picking and replete with harmonies, Easy Listening for Jerks offers many new moods of songs we think we know so well. Under a title that recalls the songwriting humour of Roger Miller and Steve Martin’s comedy stylings alike, the EPs offer a surprising and compelling mix of gravity and levity. Foggy Mountain Boys, but make it Beetlejuice.

Dualtone

On their Dualtone debut Sticking With It, Seattle-based seven-piece The Dip deliver the kind of unbridled soul/R&B that hits on every emotional level, inciting everything from raw catharsis to heavy-hearted reckoning to wildly exuberant joy. The resulting body of work captures the mood of the current moment while offering immediate escape into a more elevated state of mind.

Fat Possum

Written alongside Ignorance, How Is It… a piece of reflection and quiet, meant to hold stillness in the aftermath. Recorded live, as a performance; an improvisation, with a group of Toronto jazz musicians, it was imagined as a record of ballads; simple, pure, almost naive, but speaking to many of the same realities as Ignorance does. Two albums as two halves of the same coin; the moon and sun, a photograph and a photonegative.

Blue Note

The jazztronica duo’ full-length debut Motherland Journey is an album years in the making, celebrating pushing boundaries, taking risks, and overcoming adversity. Following their 2021 EP, We Will Rise, this new album is a star-studded affair featuring the duo (producer NK-OK and multi-instrumentalist Mr DM) joined by collaborators including Ghetto Boy, Tiana Major9, KillBeatz and more.

alt_text
BMG

Sonically, the album is a return to their earlier work and the kind of raw ethos that lies at the heart of Band of Horses. Emotionally intense, both on a personal and elemental level, we find band founder Ben Bridwell more autobiographical than he’s ever been on record detailing the nebulous frustrations and quiet indignities of relationship changes and what a person will do to make things right.

Appalachia Recording Co.

The sole, full length album from Loney Hutchins's most productive era in the 197’s. In '79 the country rock album was too folksy for LA and too electric for Nashville. Featuring a rhythm section from Dolly Parton's live band during her 'Jolene' period, and searing hot country licks, this reissue is restored from the original 2" multitrack tapes, including two never before heard tracks.

Legendary guitar player Mike Campbell, while seemingly inseparable from Tom Petty for over four decades, has always shown independence and musical curiosity which has resulted in some remarkable projects. External Combustion assures us that the Dirty Knobs are not side-band lark but, as tragic circumstances dictate, a worthy full-time concern for Campbell and his talents.

Domino

Harder, faster, shorter and louder than any other Porches record, it’s direct and pointed, charged up and chaotic, and as described by creator Aaron Maine, “the most energetic, off-the-cuff moments, collaged together into the most captivating songs I could make.” It’s a dreamy, primal journey of coping with an incomprehensible time, reveling in the joy and confusion of living through it all.

alt_text
MNRK

This is the most unforgivably doomy Crowbar record since their landmark 1998 effort, Odd Fellows Rest. It’s reverently old-school, counterbalanced by a resonant melodicism that’s stunningly mature. Songs like “Chemical Gods,” “Bleeding from Every Hole,” and “It’s Always Worth the Gain” demonstrate what Crowbar does better than any other band: powerful, evocative, and crushingly heavy music.

alt_text
Metal Blade

Filthy, belligerent and obnoxious, Midnight make music to start fights to. Since 2003, one-man-band Athenar has been churning out an ungodly racket, dropping countless demos, splits and EPs - and in 2022 he returns, delivering a catchy mixture of black metal, speed metal, and dirty punk rock. "I always want it to be loud and nasty," he asserts. "That kinda thing never gets old with me.”

alt_text
Nuclear Blast

Sabaton’s tenth full-length was crafted as a concept album that dives deep into previously unexplored atrocities, miracles and events tied to the early 20th century's World War I. The stories and history told here are not only engaging, and well-told musically and vocally, but are important to remember. A worthwhile addition to any metal (or history) fan's library.

alt_text
Closed Casket Activities

"You're born into the world as a blank canvas. As you meet people and experience things, you're getting stained and torn up. " That's the concept here. Featuring guest appearances from Geoff Rickly, Jeff Smith and Bones, This World Is Going To Ruin You is a fully realized version of Vein.FM’s darker and more disgusting inception of metallic hardcore.

Some forty years into one of music’s most impactful partnerships, Tears For Fears have arrived together at The Tipping Point – the group’s ambitious, accomplished and surprising first new studio album in nearly two decades. An inspired song cycle that vividly recalls the depth and emotional force of the group’s earliest triumphs, The Tipping Point is the bold, beautiful and powerful sound of Tears For Fears finding themselves together all over again

Over the past fifteen years, Colorado's Allegaeon have built themselves a unique place in the musical landscape, forcing both technicality and melody to the forefront as they create tumultuous and riveting death metal. With Damnum, their sixth full-length, they push everything further into the extreme, and in the process deliver the definitive Allegaeon record, which while forging into new territory, takes everything compelling about the band and enhances it.

A few years ago, there were whispers about a glorious album of Led Zeppelin covers, meticulously put together by superstar producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance). The only thing missing was vocals. Beth's dynamically expressive singing, which spans honeyed delicate tones, sandpaper gritty soulfulness, and rattle-the-rafters high notes, would be the perfect fit and the result is an artistic feat – a viscerally rocking album that is both faithful and personal.

The songs of Still Life were written in quiet moments between tours and recorded away from Texas in Ontario with musician and producer Daniel Romano. The phrasing and tones recall John Cale, The Kinks, Richard and Linda Thompson-like-minded artists of the late '60s and early '70s, another era of transition and innovation. It’s an offering of deliberation, a confirmation that creation is an act of hope.

Robert Glasper’s (who the New York Times proclaims is “probably the most prominent jazz musician of his generation”) highly anticipated third installment to the Black Radio album series is a cultural moment that celebrates black love and resilience, features an eclectic group of talented collaborators. Like every record Superchunk has made over the last thirty-some years, Wild Loneliness is unskippably excellent and infectious. It’s a blend of stripped-down and lush, electric and acoustic, highs and lows. After the (ahem, completely justifiable) anger of What a Time to Be Alive, this new record is less about what we’ve lost in these harrowing times and more about what we have to be thankful for.

alt_text
Rough Trade

Caroline’s debut often cascades with force like an avalanche, squalling and rumbling on the edge of all-out collapse. At other points they slip back into impossibly fragile moments of quiet – a simple bassline or a rattle of snare the only sound amid a dark sea of silence. These songs are expansive and emotive pieces, their rich palette drawing on a mixture of choral singing, Midwestern emo and their roots in Appalachian folk.

Spinefarm

Each track is a lyrical short story, minimal poem in prose, presented in a lavish sonic guise, featuring Scorpions trademarks from the early 1980s. The wealth of inspiration from the band’s longstanding career is an overflowing treasure chest that forges an arc between yesterday and tomorrow. Rock Believer is perhaps the group’s most characteristic album to date – a recording by a band at the pinnacle of their musical art.

alt_text
High Top Mountain

The Grammy-winning singer/songwriter's third album in twelve months is his most ambitious project to date. Written and recorded in less than a week, the record tells a classic American story of a Civil War-era couple torn apart by violence and reunited by love—what Simpson calls "a simple tale of either redemption or revenge. I just wanted to write a story—not a collection of songs that tell a story, but an actual story, front to back.”

In the wake of his time leading The Healers, Marr’s solo career has given rise to three UK Top Ten albums. He now returns with his most expansive work to date, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. It was created during the long, uncertain period that followed the arrival of the UK’s first lockdown, when his focus was pushed into both his interior life, and evoking the emotional states of others. “It’s an inspired record, and I couldn’t wait to get in and record every day,” he says. “But I had to go inwards.”

Like pausing a VHS tape, music freezes the frenetic motion of daily existence. Even if just for an instant, it calms the feedback loop of routine, engages respite, and provides perspective. Siphoning guitar transmissions and a dynamic vocal push-and-pull through a lens of cinematic production, Lo Moon deftly balance expansive soundscapes and eloquent songcraft, multimately use music to make sense of each day on their sophomore offering, A Modern Life.

Red House Records

Sisters Eleanor and Bonnie, two of roots music's most accomplished songwriter/instrumentalist/ vocalists, are releasing their first album together as The Whitmore Sisters. Ghost Stories is inspired by the loss of family, friends, ex-boyfriends and - on the title track - people who died by police violence. These "ghosts" chose to appear right as Covid became entrenched - when live music evaporated and people were isolated from each other.

Finnish figureheads Amorphis take us on an epic journey through the lands of the north, their rich cultural and historical heritage and musical traditions. This is not only an album for fans or metal connoisseurs. It’s a must for every imaginative mind out there with a soft spot for cinematic soundscapes, triumphant melodies and breathtaking dynamics measuring the borderlands of light and dark.

Continuing the fearless exploration of their legendary sound's outer limits, UK's Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death return with Resentment is Always Seismic: A Final Throw of Throes, a partner recording to their much acclaimed Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism album from 2020. Concluding matters through vital, tumultuous Grindcore and shockwave ambience, this 8-track mini-album with all previously unreleased material - including Bad Brains and Slab!

True to the band’s expanding legacy, 4 has everything you’ve come to expect from the mega group, but also unlike anything you’ve heard from them yet. This time out, they captured a certain magic – the sound of five band mates listening to and playing off one another in the spirit of live, in-the-moment collaboration. “It has a very spontaneous, fun kind of thing to it, and I love that,” Slash says. “It’s the sound of the five of us just jamming together in one room.

Closing in on 40 eventful years of existence, Canada's progressive sci-fi metal innovators Voivod introduce their 15th studio album Synchro Anarchy. Following 2018's Juno Award winning album, The Wake, and 2020's stellar Lost Machine - Live, these nine tracks reaffirm Voivod as one of the most fervently creative bands on the planet.

The Dream is an album of intrigue, beauty and humanity - a coalescence of everything that has made alt-J a global band with real staying power. True-crime inspired stories and tales of Hollywood and the Chateau Marmont rub shoulders with some of the band’s most personal moments to-date. It’s the sound of a band growing as songwriters and storytellers.

"I made a psychedelic rock record that Sleep and High on Fire fans would like," Matt Pike says when asked for a Cliffs Notes description of the album. And maybe if you're not a Sleep or High on Fire fan, you might like it too. I definitely think it's interesting; it has D-Beat punk, two-step. It's got everything and it still works together, it doesn't sound odd. It's just an off-the-wall psychedelic rock record."

Across 18 songs presented in 4 chapters, many types of style and song structures can be heard. Songs without drums, songs centered around acoustic guitar, mostly electronic songs with no guitar, wandering and repetitive melodies, songs built around the string sections. Don’t you worry though, many of the drum machines, organs, keyboards and tones that listeners associate with Beach House remain.

Scorpions - Rock Believer - Spinefarm
Legendary rockers Scorpions return with their new album, Rock Believer, which was created in the studio during the lockdown in their home base Hannover. “The album was written and recorded in the style of the classic Scorpions DNA with core Schenker/Meine compositions. We really went back to the essence of what defined us in the first place,” says front-man Klaus Meine. He goes on to explain how the new songs came to have such incredible, fresh energy and fervor: “We recorded the album as a band, live, in one room, like we did back in the Eighties. We can’t wait to get started and finally play for our fans again.” The sound of the new album has massive energy, delivers a real adrenaline rush and shows uncompromising quality.

Limited Fanfare

Known for their energetic, shoegaze-inspired pop/rock music, the Miami four-piece showcases a dreamy, yet brooding sound in their debut album (produced by Torche’s Jon Nuñez). ontheinside explores the bands introspective and emotive side through, best displayed in the lead single, “Phoebe,” – their modern take on what a big-chorus, fuzzed out rock anthem can sound like.

Abeyance Records

This is still a band whose recordings beg to be heard live, either in a punk-rock hole in the wall or honky-tonk roadhouse. Shook pulls from Hank Williams, Elliott Smith, the Sex Pistols, and her own self to create pop-savvy, honky-tonk punk that’s both an escape and a reality check––a re-opened wound and a balm. Relationships and life-changing realizations are dissected with honesty and humor, three tight minutes at a time.

Originally planned as a stripped-down acoustic-leaning release, Manticore's tracks were written prior to the pandemic, but recorded during it, when Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst suddenly had much more time at their disposal. Goodbye June - See Where The Night Goes

Goodbye June - See Where The Night Goes - Earache Records
Produced by Grammy Award winning producer Paul Moak, See Where The Night Goes is the hotly-anticipated third studio album from Nashville rock n roll prodigies Goodbye June. 11 tracks of the very finest modern day rock music, with a twist of southern twang and washed down with a shot of blues. A riot-worthy album of runaway rock n roll rooted in southern blues, See Where The Night Goes brings swinging grooves, incendiary twin-attack guitars, relentless rhythm and vocals that give Steven Tyler a run for his money. Goodbye June collide with the most legendary of rock influences whilst making their own unique gleaming print on the canvas of modern rock. This is an album not to be missed by music fans who trust in rock 'n' roll to liberate them from the mundane.

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers - Nightroamer

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers - Nightroamer - Abeyance Records
When Sarah Shook & The Disarmers released Sidelong four years ago, the irreverent quintet’s debut turned heads around the world. Then 2018’s follow-up Years hooked everyone from Rolling Stone to Vice. “This ain’t no country for hipsters or posers,” said No Depression. “It’s real, raw, mean-and-evil-bad-and-nasty bidness.” Then, the first two albums turned into a tease: The pandemic shut down the world, just as The Disarmers finished recording Nightroamer in Los Angeles. The band has had to sit on the album––until now. Nightroamer is worth the wait. This is still a band whose recordings beg to be heard live, either in a punk-rock hole in the wall or honky-tonk roadhouse. Shook’s voice is crystalline––but boozy, too, with a cadence that sounds comfortable resting in the pocket before lagging, jumping, or cozying up to the offbeat. What initially may feel like a slip is actually a stroke––and listeners cannot get enough.

Dualtone

On his eighth album, the Philadelphia-born singer/songwriter intimately documents his real-world struggles (alienation, anxiety, loneliness, despair), an outpouring born from deliberate and often painful self-examination. But, thanks to a palpable sense of playfulness, Dreamland embodies an unpredictable and endlessly imaginative sound-a prime showcase for Lee's warmly commanding voice and soul-baring songwriting.

Republic

In its slowest moments, Vedder embraces the paths of the elders before him, jumping into Americana and blues. At other times, the music is more familiar, writhing with the intensity that made its maker famous. Even then, however, Vedder assures us he’s moving forward, dressing his rock songs with all the fixings of modern production. In doing so, Earthling plants itself firmly in this moment.

4AD

A sprawling double-LP exploring the deepest elements and possibilities of Big Thief. To truly dig into all that the music of Adrianne Lenker, Max Oleartchick, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia desired in 2020, the band decided to write and record a rambling account of growth as individuals, musicians, and chosen family over 4 distinct recording sessions. *Available on Indie Exclusive Double LP*

Matador

Spoon's tenth album is alive, vital and inarguably the band's heaviest work to date. The first set of songs that the quintet has put to tape in its hometown, Austin, in more than a decade. Written and recorded over the last two years - both in and out of shutdown - these songs feel like a culmination of Spoon's career while marking a shift toward something louder, wilder, and more vivid.

The Wandering Hearts headed deep into the Catskills, where producers Simone Felice and David Baron hosted experimental and spiritual sessions in a studio packed with vintage instruments. The album echoes the timeless songcraft of Fleetwood Mac and Simon & Garfunkel with the pure passion of Jade Bird and The Lumineers. It’s a record that celebrates life, new beginnings, and striving to shine through a darkening world.

Created as a celebration of Prine’s life and career, Vol. 2 features new renditions of some of Prine’s most beloved songs performed by Brandi Carlile, Tyler Childers, Iris DeMent, Emmylou Harris, Jason Isbell, Valerie June, Margo Price, Bonnie Raitt, Nathaniel Rateliff, Amanda Shires, Sturgill Simpson and John Paul White.

After forming his own Ironworks label in the 2000’s, signing artists like Rocco DeLuca, Ron Sexsmith and creating his own Americana outfit, The Kiefer Sutherland Band, Sutherland returns with a brand new record. Bloor Street explores the sense of home both externally and within yourself while showcasing his classic fire sparking Americana tunes.

Electric Cowboy is caked in the soil where Jamil Rashad grew up, mired in the muck of this place—not stuck but freed. Grounded in personal experience and haunted by personal demons, this is an album that reaches out, that embraces the world, that mixes the confessional and the communal. But the dominant sound—the dominant mindset—is funk: gritty, warm, weird, charismatic.

Blue Note

Pianist and composer Ethan Iverson makes his Blue Note debut with a remarkable, engaging and evocative album featuring a masterful new trio with bassist Larry Grenadier and legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette. The album is an opportunity for Iverson to look back at and expand upon his own musical history as he revisits the pop/rock influenced jazz style of The Bad Plus, the influential trio that the pianist co-founded in 2000.

Korn changed the world with the release of their self-titled debut album. It was a record that would pioneer a genre, while the band’s enduring success points to a larger cultural moment. The band have continued to push the limits of the rock, alternative and metal genres in their newest release, Requiem, while remaining a pillar of influence for legions of fans and generations of artists around the globe.

Always sees Krasno venture into an elaborate mix of blues, funk, rock and soul -- a sunny, funky and laid back album combining the vibe of 1970s Laurel Canyon, swaths of Hammond B3 organ, a rhythm section that appear to be joined at the hip, and of course that punchy Eric Krasno guitar sound. It evokes the spirit of Sly Stone, D’Angelo, Lenny Kravitz, and, dare we say his name, Prince?

In The Aftermath is the deliciously depraved outcome of an all-night rock n' roll riot. The Queens, New York-based quintet escaped to record with a few handles of whiskey, and, in one 24-hour session, ran down the Stone's seminal first album of all originals, 1966's Aftermath. Tracked live in the studio with minimal overdubs, In The Aftermath is potent proof the five-piece group is one of the last great American rock n' roll bands.

Domino

These are love letters, distress signals, en plein air observations, and relaxation hymns, the collected transmissions of four people who have grown into relationships and parenthood and adult worry. But they are rendered with Animal Collective’s singular sense of exploratory wonder. Harmonies so rich you want to skydive through their shared air, textures so fascinating you want to decode their sorcery, rhythms so intricate you want to untangle their sources.

alt_text
Republic

Bastille's wildly-ambitious new album is a tribute to tech times and a glimpse of what could be to come. Exploring both the opportunities of new technology and the dark side of lives lived online, it's as playful as it is thought-provoking, as dystopian as it is dancefloor-friendly and as electronic as the band has ever been. *Available on Indie Exclusive Yellow Vinyl*

Good Memory

Erin Rae shares an intimate, honest, and playful version of herself through her sophomore album. Produced by Jonathan Wilson, and recorded in the musically hallowed grounds of California’s Topanga Canyon, the album represents a sonic and inner shift for Rae. In it, she embraces more of her influences, like baroque-pop, cosmic country, and indie-folk songs while mirroring a more compassionate self-view she calls “accepting my humanness”.

Minneapolis indie pop rebels Hippo Campus return with their third full-length, LP3. Their strongest and most complete work yet is a freshly-inked portrait excavating young adulthood, identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie. Subverting expectations as they always tend to do, this third outing is colorful, meaningful, and as existential as always, a real treat.

“We made the unabashed folk record that I have been wanting to make for years," says Jennings. "Kind of a love letter to the acoustic guitar and to musical intimacy… and features some rich and wonderful instrumentation including horns and strings. The cover art is a woven wall hanging that my wife Josie made that is hanging on our lakehouse wall. That sets the tone: warmth, home, and intimacy. Hope you enjoy!"

Nettwerk

Wild Rivers pour their collective impressions about merging into their mid-20s – a strange, liminal age where it's easy to romanticize childhood – by looking back longingly upon the time when you are truly present and you're not having this forward-thinking vision where you're worried about the next thing. Sonically, the band pulls from a spectrum of sounds, imbuing pop, rock, indie, and folk.

MNRK

WMBM is a grand display of immaculate musicianship, intricate songwriting, and raw emotion. Vocalist Eva Spence is one of the most dynamic and varied vocalists in the progressive metal scene, her gorgeous cleans and guttural screams are truly unique. There is a consistent theme throughout the record which is accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful grand piano -- the album feels like a living, breathing work of art.

A wildly inventive but utterly destructive onslaught of genre-defying extremity, Erebos is a giant leap forward. From humble origins to undisputed heavyweight status, Venom Prison are now an unstoppable force.

Boulevards - Electric Cowboy: Born In Carolina Mud

Boulevards - Electric Cowboy: Born In Carolina Mud - Normaltown Records
“I was born in the North Carolina mud,” says Jamil Rashad, better known as Boulevards, one of the most idiosyncratic artists making music in the Tarheel State. His fourth album, Electric Cowboy: Born In Carolina Mud, is caked in the soil where he grew up, mired in the muck of this place—not stuck but freed. Grounded in personal experience and haunted by personal demons, Electric Cowboy is an album that reaches out, that embraces the world, that mixes the confessional and the communal. But the dominant sound—the dominant mindset—is funk: gritty, warm, weird, charismatic. Rashad once again composed and recorded with Blake Rhein, guitarist for Durand Jones & the Indications, after they had worked so well together on 2020’s Brother! EP. They corralled an all-star team that included Adrian Quesada from the Grammy-nominated neo-soul act Black Pumas and Colin Croom from the Chicago indie-rock outfit Twin Peaks.

Paul McCartney And Wings - Wild Life: 50th Anniversary

Paul McCartney And Wings - Wild Life: 50th Anniversary - UMe
Following the eclectic charm and intimacy of 1970's solo McCartney and 1971's homespun lo-fi indie-pop progenitor RAM credited to Paul and Linda McCartney, Wild Life found Paul once again redefining his post-Beatles creative identity, this time beginning his tenure as a founding member of Wings. A rollicking left turn from its predecessors, Wild Life was recorded in barely more than a week, with more than half of the songs captured in a single take. The end result would be eight songs running the gamut from joyous freewheeling jams to proto-chamber pop to spare introspective musings — all bristling with a raw, jagged energy akin to the grungiest of garage bands—whether on the careening blues-rock rave-up of opener "Mumbo," a reggae-tinged reimagining of Mickey & Sylvia's "Love Is Strange," or the plaintive and heart wrenching ballad "Dear Friend." Mascot

On What Happens Next, roots singer-songwriter and guitarist Davy Knowles boldly steps forward with timeless and cohesive songwriting, sleek modern production, and a lyrical, play-for-the-song guitar approach informed from soul, folk, rock, and blues. It’s 12 songs are equally influenced by The Black Keys, Fantastic Negrito, Gary Clark Jr., as they are Muddy Waters, Junior Kimbrough, and R.L. Burnside.

Rough Trade

11:11 is an unqualified triumph, an album that seizes listeners with hook-filled songs imbuing feelings of warmth, urgency, and poetic beauty, even as it asks some of life’s big and difficult questions. “It spends equal time on optimism, community, reaffirming what we are and how it’s our duty to look out for one another” says singer Evan Stephens Hall. “There’s anger, love, hope and grief. The record has all of that.”

Five years sober, creatively rejuvenated, and sagely insightful, Gales is ready for the fight of his career. Aptly, he calls his masterful new album, Crown. Here, the blues firebrand opens like never before, sharing his struggles with substance abuse, his hopes about a new era of sobriety and unbridled creativity, and his personal reflections on racism – all delivered with clarity and hope for positive change.

ATO

A fever dream in sonic form, The Alien Coast is the first album recorded in their hometown of Birmingham, AL. The bands fourth full-length is a dizzying convergence of rock & roll and R&B, psychedelia and stoner metal, gospel and jazz-funk. At turns explosive, elegant, and thrillingly unhinged - it makes for a majestic backdrop to the groups visceral exploration of the strangest dimensions of the human psyche.

Dawn FM is the fifth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd. The album is narrated by Jim Carrey, and features guest appearances from Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne. Fearless

With Swan Song, The Plot In You have laid their souls bare and offered us access to the most honest and intimate parts of themselves. Perhaps it’s their way of cleansing themselves, or them taking the opportunity to reassure us as the listener – and themselves – that life gets better when things are bleak. The record is harrowing and beautiful in equal measure, and one of the most important learning experiences this year will offer.

Ol' Buddy Records

Although a gospel album has been a long-time dream for Cobb, it has only come to fruition now due to a near-death experience in July 2020, when the vehicle that he was driving, with his young son inside, got T-boned. Following in the footsteps of his country music heroes, his new album, And Now, Let’s Turn to Page… offers eight familiar hymns alongside an original song written with his wife. The collection feels reverent as well as rowdy, and completely in his comfort zone.

Alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins follows-up his acclaimed debut, Omega, with another striking album featuring his remarkable quartet with pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Daryl Johns, and drummer Kweku Sumbry. An hour-long suite comprised of 7 movements strives to bring them closer to complete vesselhood by the end, where the music would be entirely improvised and channeled collectively.

Highway 20 Records

Lu's Jukebox is a six-volume series of mostly full-band performances recorded live at Ray Kennedy's Room & Board Studio in Nashville, TN. Each volume features a themed set of songs by other artists curated by the multi-Grammy award winner, Lucinda Williams. The series aired as ticketed shows in late 2020 with a portion of ticket sales benefitting independent music venues struggling to get by through the pandemic.

Mascot

Over the course of a more than 40-year career, Steve Vai has routinely transformed what would appear to be outrageously impossible into something very, very possible... and still also pretty outrageous. Inviolate’s nine-song opus does indeed push the boundaries of instrumental guitar music as this time out, Vai quite literally invented not just a new guitar, but also a new guitar-playing technique.

Unique Leader

The career defining album from Pennsylvania's heaviest, The Last Ten Seconds of Life is the sound of a band attempting to transcend the turning of tides within their scene. Straddling the Nu Metal, Rock, Death Metal and Downtempo genres in equal measure, TLTSOL have created a magnum opus of a record that will appeal to fans of Korn and Slipknot as much as it will to fans of Alice in Chains or Pantera.

Bad Suns - Apocalypse Whenever

Bad Suns - Apocalypse Whenever - Epitaph
Bad Suns sound - dreamy '80s pastiche flanked by Stratocasters through cranked Vox amps, pulsing synths, and palpable rhythmic energy - that endeared listeners to the band in the first place, and their fourth LP, Apocalypse Whenever, uses that musical foundation as the jumping-off point for their next evolution. Conceived as "the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't yet exist," the 13-track album, helmed by longtime producer Eric Palmquist (MUTEMATH, Thrice) at his Palmquist Studios and the band's North Hollywood rehearsal spot, is more conceptually rigorous than anything they've ever attempted - but no less compelling or accessible. "We also knew we wanted the album to have a through-line, a story from beginning to end," frontman Christo Bowman explains, so the band did what any good directors would: They assembled a mood board, filtering their neo-noir version of Los Angeles through the dreamlike haziness of author Haruki Murakami, the futuristic flair of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Blade Runner, and the lifted cinematography of Spike Jonze's HER. These disparate influences don't just offer APOCALYPSE WHENEVER an expanded palette of sonic choices to color Bad Sun's airtight hooks - they help give the songs an emotional complexity that works on a multitude of levels depending on how listeners choose to receive them.

Eels - Extreme Witchcraft

Eels - Extreme Witchcraft - E Works / PIAS
Eels have had one of the most consistently acclaimed careers in music. The ever-changing project of principal singer/songwriter E (Mark Oliver Everett), Eels have released thirteen studio albums since their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak. During the height of the pandemic lockdown in early 2021, E got an out of the blue message from Mark Romanek, director of the first Eels video, "Novocaine For the Soul". It triggered him to reach out to John Parish, who was in between numerous projects and immediately got to work in his HonorSound studio in Bristol and began sending ideas to E. "I'd sneak out of bed at 4 in the morning to hear the latest thing John had sent, and try to add my part to it and get it back to him quickly before my 4 year old son woke up," E says. The resulting album is Extreme Witchcraft.

Coming off the success of their darkly cinematic third record III, Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites' latest work is their most spontaneous and joyous yet, featuring their ever-more-sophisticated songwriting and arranging and production from longtime producer and friend Simone Felice. Touching on themes of love and American life, the album features the foot-stomping, anthemic, arena-filling sound the band has become beloved for worldwide.

It’s no surprise that while being Simon Green’s most emotionally intense record, Fragments is also his masterpiece. The album features Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O’Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Born first out of fragments of ideas and experimentation, the album ultimately was fused together in a burst of creativity fueled by both collaboration and Green’s escape into the wild.

The Boy Named If is an album of urgent, immediate songs with bright melodies, stinging guitar solos, and a quick step to the rhythm. Costello says, “The full title of this record is ‘The Boy Named If (And Other Children’s Stories).’ ‘IF’ is a nickname for your imaginary friend; your secret self, the one who knows everything you deny, the one you blame for the shattered crockery and the hearts you break, even your own.”

From Billie Holiday to Iggy Pop, Chan Marshall reaches back to songs that have affected her from childhood to the present, connecting each with a deeply personal memory. Pure Noise

A Tear In The Fabric Of Life is a balancing act: a mid-length EP with grand ambitions and scope, one full of new sonic elements and a cohesive aesthetic that hangs onto the band’s trademark anthemic delivery. The songs speak to each other in a language that’s equal parts Phil Spector and death metal while balancing the tension between technical mastery and catchiness. This is Knocked Loose, distilled, and taking a leap.

Hell on Church Street, Punch Brothers’ newest album, out this week on Nonesuch Records, is the band’s reimagining of, and homage to, the late bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark solo album Church Street Blues. The record features a collection of songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Monroe, and others. Recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio in November 2020, during a time of great uncertainty, Hell on Church Street was intended as both its own work of art and a gift to Rice, who died that Christmas. Punch Brothers said of Tony Rice and Church Street Blues: “No record (or musician) has had a greater impact on us, and we felt compelled to cover it in its entirety, with the objective of interacting with it in the same spirit of respect-fueled adventure that Tony brought to each of its pre-existing songs.”

Kelley Stoltz - Antique Glow: Expanded Edition

Kelley Stoltz - Antique Glow: Expanded Edition - Third Man Records.
Third Man Records is proud to release the 20th anniversary expanded edition of Kelley Stoltz's defining album 'Antique Glow.' Originally self-released in miniscule vinyl-only quantities in 2001, 'Antique Glow' has served not only as a template for the length of Kelley Stoltz's twenty-plus year career, but has also served as a compass for other Anglophile, TASCAM 388 home recording acolytes.  Original copies featured Stoltz's clever, wry and fanciful hand-painted adornments overtop reclaimed thrift store LP jackets, Third Man's release here utilizes some of those original unused images for a die-cut sleeve that ultimately gives the listener six different possible album covers. The songs are by and large masterpieces of bedroom pop magic. From the whispering 'Here Comes the Sun'-adjacent acoustic underpinnings of album opener 'Perpetual Night' through the fuzz-threaded leads of 'Are You Electric?' Stoltz's inspirations are impeccable and clear. Sixties Davies British Invasion through 80's British Bunnymen post-punk, with appropriate off-shoots into West Coast American pop-psych, Velvets-indebted hooliganism and Drake/CSNY acoustic attenuations, the end result is pure joy. On the expanded version, standout tracks previously relegated to an Australian tour-only CD (like the breathlessly cinematic 'Old Pictures') see their first-ever vinyl and digital release while there's an additional 8 songs from the 'Antique Glow'-era seeing their first ever release in any format. The cutting room floor quality here is second-to-none, Stoltz clearly gifted with the curse of writing too many indelible songs, so the newly released 'Too Beck' (originally cast off by Kelley because he thought 'it sounded too much like Beck') and 'Umbrella' stand firm as some of the best, most timeless music Stoltz has ever released... a full two decades after he recorded them! With all instruments and vocals performed by Stoltz, the singularity of vision here is impeccably clear and executed.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Barn

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Barn - Reprise
Barn, the new Neil Young & Crazy Horse album was recorded in a remote, restored, 19th century log barn. This musical family has played together for a half century, yet they continue creating new music. Neil and the Horse fans have long shouted for “more barn” and here it is… 10 new songs that capture the wild, rock and roll spirit, the idiosyncratic raw sound and the lyrical beauty that epitomizes a classic NYCH collaboration. The last song appeared on the last morning and was recorded just an hour later during a pounding hailstorm and during the full moon. The album was recorded this summer over a handful of days. The ten new songs encompass all that Neil Young with Crazy Horse are known for, beautiful romantic acoustic ballads, powerhouse electric rockers and insightful rollicking tunes that stick with you. Niko Bolas was parked adjacent to the barn, in an exquisite analog mobile recording truck, Le Mobile ready to capture and mix the album on the spot.

One late-night, mid-tour jam session in 2017 unlocked immediate chemistry between super stars Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. Years later, Bruno called Anderson: “Remember that idea we had? Let’s do it.” One studio session grew into to a months-long collaboration, culminating the “setlist of doom.” The legendary Bootsy Collins (and “special guest host”) christened them – and introduced the world to – Silk Sonic.

The Bridge is so much more than a clever concept album, there are links between each of the songs and the prolific musician takes to the theme like a duck to water. And whilst water is the common denominator, it is really about connection - connection between people, life and death and more. It’s Sting at his most Sting-like.

Magdalena Bay peruses the sound of experimental pop, crafting a synthy world that shatters genres and bends time to the pair’s will, elevating their sound to match their philosophical reflections. “We spend all of our time together, and in some ways Mercurial World is about that particular sense of madness in containment,” Matthew Lewin says. “We live together and make art together; this immerses you in our creative, insular universe.”

Kiss - Destroyer: 45th Anniversary Edition

Kiss - Destroyer: 45th Anniversary Edition - UMe
In 1976, KISS dropped the bombshell on the world being DESTROYER, an album that originally received resistance from fans due to the band exploring a new sound and has long become the quintessential and all-time best selling KISS studio album. Exploding with concert staples and KISS Army favorites like “Detroit Rock City,” “Shout It OutLoud,” and “God Of Thunder” – the album’s new sounds came from the softer side of songs like “Do You Love Me?,”and songs heavy with orchestral arrangements including “Great Expectations” and their surprise hit single “Beth.” For the 45th anniversary, UMe is releasing the most comprehensive Super Deluxe Edition 4CD + Blu-ray Audio boxset that will melt the KISS Army’s minds. The original album on CD 1 is newly remastered by Abbey Road Mastering, CD 2 features 15 demos from Paul Stanley’s and Gene Simmons’s personal archives – 9 of which are unreleased. CD 3 loads up with studio outtakes, alternate versions / mixes and single edits – most notably a brand-new stripped-down mix for “Beth (Acoustic Mix)” where we found the acoustic guitar stems recorded for the entire song but originally only used in the last several closing notes of the song on the album. CD 4 features a ripping performance from the band’s visit to Paris France at the L’Olympia on May 22, 1976. Steven Wilson was brought in to create a first-ever Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround mix of the original studio album plus 2 bonus tracks “Beth (Acoustic Mix)” and “Sweet Pain (Original Guitar Solo)” the latter featuring Ace Frehley’s original recorded guitar solo that was not released on the studio album (this track is available on the 2012 Destroyer: Resurrected project.) Packaging features a lift top-style box loaded with so much ephemera even KISS fans may need to seek medical advice upon receiving this boxset. Andy Shauf - Wilds

Andy Shauf - Wilds - ANTI
Few artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based, Saskatchewan-raised musician’s songs unfold like short fiction: they’re densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. Like he’s done throughout his career, Shauf wrote, performed, arranged, and produced every song on his new album Wilds at his studio space in the west end of Toronto.  Over the course of a year-and-a-half, Shauf had written more than 50 songs, and pared down this massive body of work, into a single album’s worth of material, which became 2020’s highly acclaimed The Neon Skyline album. These songs focused on a theme by intertwining the individual characters stories of a group of friends who gathered for one night at the same local bar. Wilds includes songs from those same writing sessions, that did not fit into the Skyline storyline and had their own singular identity apart from that album, though he does revisit with his old friends Judy and Jeremy in this outing.

Albarn says "I have been on my own dark journey while making this record and it led me to believe that a pure source might still exist."In a career of perpetual musical shifts and exploration, the record uncovers yet more ground, finding expansive orchestral arrangements nestling with intimate melodies, discordance brushing up against infectious majesty, all set to some of Albarn's most arresting vocal performances to date. Much like the beauty and chaos of the natural world it soundtracks, The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows vividly documents the emotional ebb and flow of the human condition, in all it's extremes, serving as a soul enriching document for our times.

As a whole, Geist is both esoteric and accessible. Songs range from a concise, pared-back cover of Syd Barrett's tilt-a-whirl-esque "Late Night," to the meditative Dune-inspired "Rare to Wake," to the mostly a-cappella "Awaken and Allow," which channels Lay's deep Irish roots - it's intensity mirroring the anticipation and anxiety that come with taking the first step to accepting change for yourself.

Mann started developing the new music in 2018 when she agreed to write songs for a stage adaptation of Girl, Interrupted, Susannah Kaysen’s 1993 memoir. Each song touches on a chapter or character in the book, which details the nearly two years Kaysen spent in a Massachusetts psychiatric institution starting in 1967. It’s material Mann poignantly confronts, having had her own struggles with mental illness.

Night Divine is a series of hymns covered by Fallon, lead singer of the beloved heartland-punk band The Gaslight Anthem. This is a project he's been wanting to create for a long time, inspired by his time singing in the church choir as a child: “These are some of the very first sounds I remember hearing as a child. My mother used to sing these hymns everywhere she went. I felt it was time for me to join in.”

Curtis Harding - If Words Were Flowers

Curtis Harding - If Words Were Flowers - Anti
Simply calling Curtis Harding a soul man feels reductive. Harding's voice conveys pain, pleasure, longing, tenderness, sadness and strength-a full gamut of emotions. Today his voice takes on an optimistic lilt with his his new album, If Words Were Flowers. If Words Were Flowers is Harding's first new music since 2018, a follow up to his critically acclaimed 'Face Your Fears" album. It features songs like " Hopeful", where Harding croons with devotion over a classic soul groove, textured with infectious horn playing, background singers and modern psychedelic flourishes. Harding fuels his psychedelic sound with the essence of Soul but isn't bound by it. Instead, his songs convey an eclectic blend of genres leaping from the many musical lives he has lived from following his evangelical Gospel-singing mother on tour around the country as a child to rapping in Atlanta, forming a garage band with The Black Lips' Cole Alexander to singing back-up for Cee Lo Green. Through these experiences he fully embraces life's darkest intricacies and conjures dynamic, addictive melodies

SUSTO - Time In The Sun

SUSTO - Time In The Sun - New West Records
Time In The Sun is the 4th full length album from Charleston, SC band SUSTO. The album was written and recorded in the midst of a lot of life changing events for lead writer/singer Justin Osborne. Like everyone around the world, Osborne was navigating the global issues felt from the pandemic while normal life continued with its own blessings and challenges.. "We were navigating the global and national issues that everyone else was dealing with, but also I became a father and also lost my father. There was a lot of contemplation going on in my brain, a lot of personal evolution going on in my life, and songwriting was my way of working through it all. The title Time in the Sun is meant to be a monument to my own human existence and also a tribute to the human experience in general. I wouldn’t claim to understand what it means to be a human, from the countless different perspectives of the world, but I do have my own experience to reflect on and I want to be able to express and explain that in some way. I guess this album is an attempt at that. At the core though, it’s just a collection of songs about my life and my feelings."

Bad Wolves - Dear Monsters

Bad Wolves - Dear Monsters - Better Noise Music
Expectations never mattered to Bad Wolves. Instead, the Los Angeles band fused unpredictable metallic intensity and impressive instrumental proficiency to arena-ready hooks, transforming from underdogs into elite platinum-certified hard rock contenders without compromise or apology. Since 2017, the core group-John Boecklin [drums], Doc Coyle [lead guitar, backing vocals], Chris Cain [rhythm guitar], and Kyle Konkiel [bass, backing vocals]-have consistently subverted expectations and accomplished the seemingly impossible. In 2018, the band earned a platinum plaque, topped iTunes, and ruled Active Rock at #1 for three weeks straight. This momentum also propelled their debut album, Disobey, to a Top 25 debut on the Billboard Top 200. In between performing to sold out audiences on multiple continents with heavyweights such as Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth, 2019's N.A.T.I.O.N. yielded their fifth straight #1 at Active Rock, "Sober," and brought their total stream tally past the half-billionmark-unprecedented for a modern rock band. Not to mention, LoudWire hailed it among the "50 Best Rock Albums of 2019" as Billboard and Consequence of Sound chronicled their rise. In the midst of 2021, Bad Wolves welcomed Daniel "DL" Laskiewicz-previously of The Acacia Strain-as lead vocalist, ushering in a new chapter with their third full-length offering, Dear Monsters,[Better Noise Music], led by the single "Lifeline."

Save Face - Another Kill For The Highlight Reel

Save Face - Another Kill For The Highlight Reel - Epitaph
Save Face are a band who have always prided themselves on taking risks and the New Jersey band have doubled down on that sentiment with their sophomore album, Another Kill For The Highlight ReelAnother Kill For The Highlight Reel, which features indelibly human performances, including a guest appearance from Thursday’s Geoff Rickly on “A.M. Gothic”. “There’s something about the New Jersey kinship [between Geoff and I] that really resonates with me,” Tyler Povanda explains. “New Jersey’s music scene is really something special.” Musically, the album—which was produced by the Movielife’s Brett Romnes—sees Povanda taking influence from his Jersey brethren like Thursday but adds a theatrical twist. “‘GLITTER’ was the first song I wrote that ended up being on this album and it bridges the gap between Merci and Another Kill For The Highlight Reel, ” Povanda says. “I think that song serves as a cool sonic metaphor for the transformation of the band. I would say this album isn’t narrative in the same way as the last one, but it does feel much more immersive.”

My Morning Jacket reaffirm the rarefied magic that has made them so beloved, embedding each song with moments of discovery, revelation and ecstatic catharsis. It comes after a near permanent hiatus for the band until performing four shows in summer '19 left them with a new energy. Jim James engineered/produced at 64 Sound in LA where the band spent weeks in intentional seclusion emerging with their self-titled 9th album.

After breaking through with music that compassionately distills the Latinx experience, singer-songwriter Roberto Carlos Lange looks within on his hypnotic forthcoming album. Characteristically contemplative and joyful, Far In allows for listeners to imprint their own experiences and daydreams onto it. “It doesn’t have to be isolating, to go far in,” Lange says. “It’s more like an invitation.” Let’s dance.

Matador

The sky over -io, Circuit des Yeux’s first album since 2017, is Florida's strange, radiant orange. It's a built environment, unnatural, made from concrete and glass, with skyscrapers that stretch to the vanishing point as you gaze up at them. It's crumbling and suffocating, a city perpetually on the brink of collapse, where tension never topples over into catharsis, where the heat never breaks.

Sympathy For Life finds the Brooklyn band at both their most instinctive and electronic, spinning their bewitching, psychedelic storytelling into fresh territory, yet maintaining their unique identity. Built largely from improvised jams, inspired by New York clubs, Primal Scream and Pink Floyd and produced in league with Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, Hot Chip, David Byrne), this was always destined to be a dance album.

Black Metal 2 is the most approachable album of Dean Blunt's career without losing the vital ambiguity that has always made his records special. This is minimalist sophisti-pop, sung by a terminally downward-looking troubadour. It’s the clearest Blunt has ever sounded and one of his most thrilling releases to date.

Every Time I Die - Radical

Every Time I Die - Radical - Epitaph
Every Time I Die is a loud rock institution committed to leaving an outpouring of chaotic passion and blissful malcontent all over their records and on the stage. With boiling charisma and unrelenting energy to spare, the Buffalo, NY band manages not one but two near-impossible tasks. They’ve survived two decades as an underground entity cherished for coloring outside the lines, and contrary to most career arcs, continually improving with each successive album as they charge ahead. ETID makes a glorious hardcore-punk noise. Alchemized by a swampy summoning of Southern rock and coarse poetry, the music swirls beneath sardonic and clever wordplay, cementing them as leaders, not followers. The band’s ninth studio album, Radical, is 16 tracks of peak-ETID, including raucous new anthems. They deliver what you have come to know and love and then diverge into new paths. To say that “All This And War” featuring guest vocals by Josh Scogins from The ‘68 is absolute brutal heaviness is an understatement. It’s an addictive punch in the face, you’ll want on repeat. The boys then run off to explore the dark haunted woods of a more somber and melodic side in the track “Thing With Feathers” featuring Andy Hull from Manchester OrchestraRadical proves with every track that it is a distillation of the strengths of their past, injected with their unyielding revelry and signature sarcasm while cognizant – and fiercely combative – of the present state of world affairs.

United in their desire to write a record that reflected their expansive musical interest from 70s rock to raucous roots to indie pop, their LA written, Nashville recorded album is a masterclass in unexpected vocal harmonic convergence. With Breaking Point, Jackson + Sellers will establish themselves as two individual artists who together, share a deep friendship, musical kinship and the ability to craft tight singular pop rock songs that will embed themselves in your ears for the rest of time.

Five Legged Dog, a four-album acoustic retrospective/covers tribute, is a testament to Melvins’ unmatched work ethic and their penchant for pushing the envelope, then shredding it to bits. Nichols, Fat Possum's first solo blues signing in nearly 20 years, wrestles with prescient topics, such as empathy and forgiveness, regret and loss on moving, and the pitfalls of lives lived too close to the edge. I went through the ideas I keep on my phone and thought, 'Shit, I need to write these.'" And with that, Peso, Keith’s first album in five years, was born.

Pokey LaFarge - In The Blossom Of Their Shade

Pokey LaFarge - In The Blossom Of Their Shade - New West Records
Pokey LaFarge's 7th studio solo album, In The Blossom Of Their Shade, showcases the positivity of coming out of the darkness and into the light. When the 2020 global pandemic hit, LaFarge’s rigorous work ethic powered him through the potentially challenging creative period. As days became a couple months, songs blossomed from embryonic ideas into full-formed ones and he was ready to move on, which typified his mindset as a working artist. With this record LaFarge captures the thematic notion of being the perfect summer afternoon soundtrack...the type of music you want to listen to while having a cocktail with your significant other. It makes sense musically as well — LaFarge intentionally crafted songs that created space and have melodies that can glide throughout a composition that’s a far cry from the swing and blues-infused songs of his earlier work. LaFarge is an artist who refuses to rest on his laurels and compromise. He’s always motivated and ready to create. With In the Blossom of Their Shade the album is one of LaFarge’s strongest and most mature efforts to date.

Toby Keith - Peso In My Pocket

Toby Keith - Peso In My Pocket - Show Dog, LLC
Singer, songwriter and entertainer Toby Keith releases his first all-new Show Dog Nashville album in more than five years. Peso In My Pocket was co-produced by Kenny Greenberg and Keith, and features the highest Billboard Country Airplay chart debut of his career with the lead single "Old School." Though Keith has accomplished much since the 2015 release of 35 MPH Town - perhaps most notably in writing the Clint Eastwood inspired "Don't Let The Old Man In" - a new studio album was long overdue. And Peso In My Pocket has more than a little to do with the worldwide pandemic. "My whole musical career, I haven't been off the road this long," Keith says, calling 2020 "a reset button I never would have hit." Also deserving of credit for the collection is Mexico, where Keith has a house he stayed at for the first several months of the crisis. "It was like being on the moon," he says. "A lot of my friends down there were afraid they wouldn't be let back in the U.S., so they all went home. I wasn't on the road and nobody could go anywhere, so I thought, 'You've written a long list of songs by yourself, dumbass. Get up and get busy!' I went through the ideas I keep on my phone and thought, 'Shit, I need to write these.'"

Xenia Rubinos - Una Rosa

Xenia Rubinos - Una Rosa - Anti
Xenia Rubinos is a New York City based artist who's been revered for her innovative voice and maze-like knack for melody. Una Rosa is Rubinos' third album, her second on Anti- Records, following up her critically acclaimed Black Terry Cat (2016).Xenia Rubinos dips in and out of genre and structure to create movingly powerful songs. Her powerhouse vocals stem from a combination of R&B, Hip-Hop and Jazz influences, all delivered with a soulful punk aura. Pitchfork has lauded the radiant singer as "a unique new pop personality" while The New Yorker described her work as "rhythmically fierce, vocally generous music that slips through the net of any known genre."Having previously collaborated and toured with acts as diverse as Battles, Deerhoof, Man Man and Tune-Yards, Rubinos' energetic live show echoes some of the larger than life icons she admired as a child like Nina Simone and Erykah Badu, while wielding a space in music that is utterly her own. "I think my sound is a collage of different music coming together on a visceral level, connecting the dots with my voice and imagination," she said.Una Rosa is produced by Rubinos along with her longtime collaborator and drummer Marco Buccelli, and is full of color- drawing much of it's multichromatic sound from the bright colors of pop art, which Xenia was immersed in during the writing process.

cleopatrick - BUMMER

cleopatrick - BUMMER - Nowhere Special Recordings
"Listening to the story of Canadian duo cleopatrick is a bit like hearing the plot of the best, most righteously validating coming-of-age film never made. Two friends meet aged four in Hicksville, Nowheretown (real name: Cobourg, Ontario, population 19,000), grow up completely inseparable, form a band and, against numerous obstacles, blossom into a genuine, global underground sensation. There are heroes and villains, highs and lows and, crucially, some of the most poetic plot twists that could seem almost too perfect, were they not completely true.

Take the story of 2017 breakthrough track ‘hometown’ for example. “It’s one of the craziest, most ironic things that’s ever happened,” begins vocalist and guitarist Luke Gruntz. “I was going to college because I was too scared to put all my chips in the band pile, and that’s what ‘hometown’ is about: it’s a song about feeling like we’re doing all this stuff and we’re working so hard and we’re just never going to be heard. It’s literally a song about people probably never hearing our songs. And then by some act of the universe, that song ended up unlocking all the doors for us.”

Today, cleopatrick has logged 77 million streams and counting - all from an increasingly dedicated fanbase who’ve found the duo, completed by drummer Ian Fraser, their own way: no major label, no big budget, just two best pals knuckling down, cementing a unique sonic alchemy and filling a space of honest, empathetic yet undeniably heavy-hitting rock music that they’d been searching for themselves for years. Between multiple sold out tours in Canada, the US and the UK/EU and appearances at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Reading/Leeds, the pair have been crafting BUMMER: a debut album that sees cleopatrick harness all the magic they’ve been brewing over their two-decade friendship and funnel it into a record that aims to reinvigorate the rock landscape from the ground up. Taking the ethos of their New Rock Mafia collective - a group of friends and fellow bands, united in making a more inclusive, equality-driven space in rock music - and imbuing it with the sonic ambition and ferocity of a record designed to be played hard and loud, it’s an album about two friends, who’ve been with each other since the formative first steps that adorn ‘BUMMER’’s heartwarming cover image and made something that’s a testament to the power of sticking to your guns."

Thrice - Horizons/East

Thrice - Horizons/East - Epitaph
To emerge from a global pandemic with a renewed sense of situational awareness, hard won insight, and a new album is the kind of move we’ve come to expect from Thrice over the last twenty years. With Horizons/East, Dustin Kensrue and his bandmates address, with candor and courage, the fragile and awkward arrangements that pass for civilization, while inviting us to dwell more knowingly within our own lives. Without surrendering any of the energy and hard edge of their previous albums, they’ve given us a profoundly meditative work which serves as a musical summons to everyday attentiveness. Since forming THRICE with guitarist Teppei Teranishi, bassist Eddie Breckenridge, and drummer Riley Breckenridge in 1998, Kensrue has never been one to back down from a mental fight. This mood is set by the opening synth-driven number “Color of the Sky,” which sounds well-suited to accompany the closing credits of the Stranger Things season finale. Think Flying Lotus giving way to Elbow and setting the listener down in a new dimension. A self-recorded effort, Horizons/East conveys a palpable sense of danger, determination, and possibility.

The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die - Illusory Walls

The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die - Illusory Walls - Epitaph
Sometimes, the best place to begin is at the end. If you really want to dig deep into Illusory Walls, the fourth album by The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, it definitely helps to do that. That’s because epic closer “Fewer Afraid”—all 19 minutes, 44 seconds of it—doesn’t just revisit the themes and ideas on the ten songs that precede it, but also offers a self-aware summary of the Connecticut band’s entire history. It’s the conclusion of all the stories within the record as well as a nod to all the lives that helped make them—little glimpses of everything that’s come before, on both a micro, immediate level, and a more universal one. “That song is a higher level look at my whole life and the whole world,” explains vocalist/guitarist David F. Bello, “as well as the album, our band and our discography. It places the band in the context of the rest of the world, as if we’re listening to everything that came before. It touches on all the themes of the previous songs, but there are also callbacks to songs
from earlier in our career. But in this song, they’re the object, not the subject—I’m talking about a world in which these things happen, not talking about these things happening.”  Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the band—completed by Steven K. Buttery (drums and percussion), Joshua Cyr (bass/vocals) and Katie Dvorak (vocals/synth)—had nothing but time to realize the full extent of their musical and thematic aspirations. And so, four years on from lauded third album Always Foreign, they were able to make what is undoubtedly the band’s most ambitious and epic record to date. Written and recorded remotely—a first for the band—Illusory Walls takes on the weight of human existence while it’s buckling under the pressure of today’s near-dystopian society. Personal anxieties and political struggles collide with a series of portentous, apocalyptic and dramatic tunes, resulting in some of the darkest music the band has made since forming in 2009.
