Reviews:

The world of pop music is less a space of real musical adventurousness as it is a battleground of attitudes and easily identifiable sounds and stands. You can be all mean and aggro (Limp Bizkit), tortured and moody (AFI) or hot and bothered (J-Lo) but it has to be obvious and it has to either represent the status quo or the change you wish to see in the world. Considering this, one should be very happy for the sudden success of Denmark duo Junior Senior. Releasing this album last year on Danish indie Crunchy Frog, Junior Senior members Jesper "Junior" Mortensen and Jeppe "Senior" Laursen have seen the album's visibility reach around the globe thanks to the single "Move Your Feet" and playfully challenge rock's sexual politics (Junior is straight, while Jeppe is not). In addition, their debut D-d-don't Stop the Beat is unapologetically dorky and sweet. So we should all take heart, for the Revenge of the Nerds may yet be wreaked in our lifetimes after all.As for the sound of this album, think about tasting an oddly-flavored yet vaguely familiar piece of candy that you can easily identify yet not fully classify. Surely, Junior Senior love their analog keyboards and twangy surf guitars as much as any other emo devotee, as on the opener "Go Junior, Go Senior." They name-check themselves on songs like "Dynamite" and "Rhythm Bandits" as if they were starring in their own Saturday morning cartoon. And "Chicks and Dicks" adopts a you-take-the-girls-I'll-take-the-boys stance that will show all of us on the eve of the Supreme Court decision that we CAN all get along. So perhaps this album could signify the dawn of a new era in cooperation, tolerance and shorter lines at the supermarket. On D-d-don't Stop the Beat, these guys sure don't shy away from dreaming it.
